Enhancing Performance: Our Collaboration with the Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets sought to enhance their performance analytics by integrating diverse data sources into a cohesive Athlete Management System (AMS). Leveraging expertise in data collection, ETL processes, AMS development, and actionable reporting, we collaborated to streamline their data workflows, enabling informed decision-making and optimizing player performance.

The Problem

  • Performance data collected daily from a variety of sources, including
    • GMS/Acceleromater/Gryoscope (Kinexon, Catapult)
    • Force measuring (ForceDecks, ForceFrame)
    • Gym-based hardware
  • Data ecosystem constantly changing with new technology and player/staff needs
  • Data needs to be processed quickly and returned to stakeholders for immediate use
  • Current approaches typically required training and medical staff to create their own analyses, using tools like Microsoft Excel, which were not necessarily repeatable nor useful in collaboration

Objectives

  • Data Management
    • Audit the current data collection hardware and software processing completed by the club
    • Assess the current data processing and use practices to identify opportunities for improvement and enhancement
    • Organize the current data into more efficient and relatable structures
    • Optimize the methods in which data are extracted and processed
  • Insight Generation
    • Understand the needs and desired of the on-the-ground staff on a daily, weekly, and periodic basis 
    • Create output products summarizing data including
      • Performance Athlete Management System
      • Daily reporting charts, reports, and leaderboards that are easy to read and understand
      • Customized analysis of individuals or groups to inform training prescriptions
  • Education
    • Orient the staff on how to best use the data and to communicate actionable insights to coaching staff and front office
    • Mentor coaches to better understand concepts related to sports science, biomechanics, and analytics
    • Encourage a growth mindset for all staff to better utilize and execute the data-driven decisions created with our assistance

Strategies

  • DeWitt Method identified current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the current data use by the team
  • Through discussion and interaction, critical KPI and potential new data insight approaches were created
  • Leverage database, AI, and coding to automate and expedite data processing, allowing for more effort to be spent developing insight to improve performance

Implementations & Deliverables

  • API code developed to extract data from different sources into common data lakehouse 
  • Customized team report delivered after each game detailing player loading and intensity 
  • Custom dashboards summarizing and integrating force plate data from multiple tests to allow an integrated approach towards optimal player health and recovery 
  • Detailed and specific periodic reports to better understand player progress
