DeWitt Method

Better decisions from your performance data.

I'm Dr. John DeWitt — sport scientist, former NASA biomechanist, and founder of DeWitt Method. I help elite performance teams turn the data they already collect into clear answers and confident calls.

01

Observation

Get more out of the data you're already collecting — and identify what else you should be capturing to see what really matters.

02

Insight

Cut through the noise. We help your team interpret patterns and signals that connect directly to performance outcomes.

03

Recommendation

Turn that understanding into clear decisions — either by upskilling your staff to do it themselves, or by delivering project-based recommendations.

ABOUT

Dr. John DeWitt

I founded DeWitt Method to help elite performance teams use their data to make better decisions. After three decades in human performance — including 20 years at NASA Johnson Space Center studying the biomechanics of exercise in microgravity to reduce health risks for astronauts — I've learned that most teams are collecting plenty of data. The hard part is knowing what it means and what to do about it.

I've worked with professional, collegiate, and Olympic teams across soccer, basketball, football, and volleyball, and I'm regularly sought after as a media expert on astronaut health and human spaceflight.

WHAT WE OFFER

Services

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Build Your Team's Data Skills

Hands-on training that turns your coaches and staff into confident interpreters of their own data — so the value compounds long after our engagement ends.

• Workshops for coaches & staff

• Custom curriculum to your sport

• Practical, sport-specific examples

• 1-on-1 analyst mentoring

PROJECT-BASED ADVISORY

Find the Insights, Make the Call

You bring the data and the question; we deliver the answer. Defined-scope projects that produce concrete recommendations your team can implement.

• Performance question deep-dives

• Data review & interpretation

• Written recommendations & briefings

• Decision-maker workshops

DATA STRATEGY

Know What to Collect — and Why

For teams who suspect they're missing the signal. We help you decide what data actually moves the needle for your goals — and how to start capturing it.

• Gap & opportunity assessment

• KPI & metric design

• Collection workflow design

• Reporting structure setup

1-on-1 Coaching

Personalized mentoring for practitioners and individuals who want to understand the data they're already collecting — force plates, wearables, AMS dashboards, whatever your signal source. We work session by session on your real data and the real decisions in front of you.

• Understand your signal source & sensors

• Choose the KPIs that actually matter

• Translate KPIs into decisions

• Build interpretation habits that stick

WHO THIS IS FOR
Coach or Athletic trainer at a pro team

Their organization invested in force plates. The data is flowing — but the interpretation isn't.

What we do together: We work through signal sources, jump-test metrics, asymmetry KPIs, and how each one maps to a return-to-play call.

Self-tracking athlete or executive

Apple Watch, WHOOP, Oura — plenty of numbers, but no sense of which ones matter or when to act on them.

What we do together: We build a personal interpretation framework: which metrics are noise, which signal recovery or readiness, and what to change in your routine.

THE METHOD

How We Work

01

Observation

We help you make the most of the data you're already collecting — and identify what else you should be capturing. Most teams are sitting on more useful information than they realize.
02

Insight

We work alongside your staff to interpret patterns and signals that connect directly to performance outcomes — building the analytical skills your team needs to do this on their own.
03

Recommendation

Turn understanding into action. We deliver project-based recommendations your coaches can implement immediately, or train your personnel so they can produce recommendations themselves.
FIELD NOTES

How I think about performance data.

The data you're collecting vs. the data you actually need

Most performance staff are sitting on dashboards full of metrics that look useful but don't map to a single decision. Here's the audit I run with new clients to separate signal from noise.

Why your readiness score probably isn't predicting what you think

Wellness questionnaires and HRV are useful — but only when you've validated them against outcomes that matter for your sport. A short note on what to do before you trust the number.

What 20 years studying astronauts taught me about training the human body

Microgravity is the world's harshest detraining stimulus. The methods we built to fight it apply directly to in-season load management, return-to-play, and long-haul athlete monitoring.

FAQ

Questions I hear before a discovery call.

How does a typical engagement work?
Most clients start with a free 30-minute discovery call so we can scope the problem. From there, engagements fall into one of three shapes: a defined project with written recommendations, an ongoing advisory retainer, or a training program for your staff. We agree the scope, deliverables, and timeline in writing before any work starts.
Pricing is project-based and depends on scope. Project engagements typically run from a few thousand dollars for a focused data review up to larger figures for multi-month strategy or training programs. I'll give you a clear written proposal after the discovery call — no surprises.
Both. Most data review, strategy, and mentoring work is done remotely so we can move quickly. For team workshops, staff training, or facility-specific assessments, on-site visits work well and can usually be combined into one or two intensive days.
Performance directors, head coaches, sport scientists, and data analysts at professional, collegiate, and Olympic teams — plus the occasional federation or technology vendor. Sports I've worked across include soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, and others. If you're collecting performance data and unsure you're getting value from it, we're probably a fit.
Yes. NDAs are standard and I sign them before any data changes hands. Anything you share — athlete data, internal processes, decisions in progress — stays between us.

Best fit: performance staff at clubs, federations, or academies who already collect data but aren't sure they're using it well.
